The Castle of Otranto, Horace Walpole. The first of this kind (in the 18th century is written) and a classic.

Designed Besides being an author, with all that obsessed with gothic, Walpole is an amateur architect, Strawberry Hill in London movemnt a series that has been taken by the Goths in Victoria to open in the 19th century.

Other works can be more accessible, Bram Stoker's Dracula and Frankenstein by Mary Shelly. (Forget the movies, this is real). Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen was originally written as a parody of the Gothic style, but it has outlived its origin and has a classic itself.

My favorite is the classic portrait of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde, my favorite is the work of the modern seeker Patrick McGrath. I have many recommendations, if you want, and I promise you that there are no dragons or witches or kitschy.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. This is a classic, but it has gothic elements. No dragons or vampires witches. This is an impressive reading.

The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice has been described as Gothic and the first 5 books are really great. I have many books in the series in all the libraries I visited times.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is a classic Gothic. Oh, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

I also recommend Anne Rice, Interview with a Vampire. And the rest of the Vampire Chronicles. They were so good, what has been done in films! :)
